What is Penn Power's Price to Compare?

Penn Power delivers electricity to homes in western Pennsylvania. Since January 1, 2024, Penn Power has been part of FirstEnergy Pennsylvania, but it still has its own Price to Compare. If you haven't picked an electric supplier, Penn Power also supplies the electricity itself, at its default rate. That rate is called the Price to Compare, or PTC. It's the cents-per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) figure a supplier offer has to beat for you to save on the supply part of your bill.

The PTC covers supply only, meaning generation plus transmission. Penn Power's delivery (distribution) charges stay on your bill no matter who supplies your power.

Sources: FirstEnergy's Price to Compare table for its Pennsylvania utilities (June 2026 and December 2026 periods) and FirstEnergy Pennsylvania's December 1, 2026 Price to Compare filing. The December figure is the rate FirstEnergy filed with the PA PUC. FirstEnergy's sample calculation sheets are marked "for illustrative purposes only," so check your bill once it takes effect. The figures don't include a tiny state tax adjustment of less than 0.1¢.

That's an increase of about 0.42¢ per kWh, or roughly 3.1%. A home using 700 kWh a month would pay about $2.91 more per month for supply on Penn Power's default rate.

When does Penn Power's Price to Compare change?

FirstEnergy says its Pennsylvania utilities' Price to Compare changes twice a year, in June and December. The new price takes effect on June 1 and December 1 and can go up or down each time, depending mostly on what was paid for power at the utility's default-service auctions. A fixed-rate plan from a supplier locks your supply price for the length of your contract, so Penn Power's price changes don't affect you while that contract lasts.

How to switch electric suppliers in Penn Power territory

  1. Find your Penn Power Price to Compare and your usage. Look on the first page of your Penn Power bill, in the Price to Compare message box, or use the table above.
  2. Check your current contract, if you already have a supplier. Look for the end date and any early cancellation fee. Pennsylvania waives those fees during the last 30 days of a contract.
  3. Compare fixed-rate offers against Penn Power's Price to Compare, including the new December 1 price. The state's official comparison site is PAPowerSwitch.com.
  4. Sign up with the supplier you choose. You'll need your 20-digit Penn Power customer number. FirstEnergy says it's on page 3 of your bill, under the heading Basic Charges.
  5. Watch for your disclosure statement. The supplier must send you written terms. You have a 3-business-day window to change your mind after you enroll.

After that, the supplier and Penn Power handle the switch. FirstEnergy says it will send you a letter to confirm you chose the new supplier. Under Pennsylvania's accelerated switching rules, a switch can take effect in about three business days once Penn Power is notified. Your bill will show the new supplier's rate from the effective date on.

What stays the same when you switch

Penn Power still delivers your electricity over the same lines, and your service isn't interrupted.
Penn Power still sends your bill, fixes outages and reads your meter. You call Penn Power for power problems, same as always.
Your Penn Power delivery charges don't change. Only the supply price does.
You can switch again later, or go back to Penn Power's default rate, at any time. Just check your contract for fees first.

What to watch out for

Variable rates. A low teaser price can jump with the market. The PA Public Utility Commission warns shoppers about this. A fixed rate keeps the same price for the whole contract.
Early cancellation fees. Many contracts charge a fee if you leave early. Read the disclosure before you sign.
Monthly or enrollment fees. A monthly fee raises your real price per kWh. Add it in before you compare.
Introductory prices. Some offers start low for the first few billing cycles, then change. Ask what the price is after the intro period.
Contract end dates. If you ignore renewal notices, your supplier can keep you on at a different price, which may be variable.
